TATTOO ARTIST BASED AT love and hope STUDIO, AUCKLAND

about AMANDA

"I attended my first tattoo convention in 2013 and was hooked."

How did you become a tattoo artist?

... this was the New Zealand Tattoo and Art Festival in 2013. I was an art student at the time and didn't really know what avenue I wanted to go down with my art.  It was that convention that changed the game for me really and made me decide what I wanted to do, and that was tattooing.  I was lucky enough to get my apprenticeship about a year after that under Dwain Aiono at Spacifik Ink in Napier.

What's your tattoo studio's vibe?

Women owned and run.  A calm, feminine space, very inclusive and welcoming to all. It's a beautiful, relaxed professional atmosphere.

What is your tattoo style and inspiration?

Mostly illustrative, neo-traditional style and mostly I draw animals. My inspiration comes from animals in general, being vegan is a huge part of my life along with animal welfare and animal rights. Currently I'm really enjoying tattooing little witchy animals, magical themes and portraits.  Think Beatrix Potter style of like little cute critters in clothing. I love colour and fun pieces that tell a story.

What happens in your spare time?

I give a lot of time to animal rescue centres and volunteer for a local Rabbit Rescue here, helping save and rehome rabbits in New Zealand.

Advice for a tattoo first timer?

Do you research and ask around, word of mouth goes a long way in the industry. Meet with the artist and make sure you get on, and trust your gut before committing to a tattoo.
